Tree Hugger tree shelters.

A breakthrough tree shelter with the power to change how we embrace net zero - the most sustainable alternative to plastic tree guards.

Woven for a better future

Tree Hugger protects whips and creates conditions where they can thrive. It’s designed to help eliminate plastic from the environment and reduce the CO2 generated through manufacturing and transportation. Made from natural materials and low impact processes, it tackles long term barriers to sustainability across the supply chain – and in the ground.

Our Tree Shelters are:

  • 100% biodegradable
  • 100% sustainable
  • No plastics or derivatives
  • Made in the UK
  • 5-year life span
  • Promotes healthy growth
  • Allows lateral spread
  • Improves sapling survival rate
  • 2 heights (0.6m and 1.2m)
  • 5 diameters (70, 80, 90, 100, 110mm)
  • Nests of 5 (50 nests per pack)

Materials

Tree Hugger is manufactured from a composite of organic loomstate cotton substrate coated with ethically-sourced pine rosin. All materials are sustainably sourced and don’t contain plastics or derivatives.

  • Organic loomstate cotton substrate – complies as a minimum (manufactured, inspected and assessed) with Global Organic Textile Standards 5.0 (GOTS) or the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI)
  • Pine rosin coating – manufactured from pine trees certified as sustainably managed in accordance with the Swedish FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification)

Advantages of Our Tree Shelters:

  • The woven structure provides radial and axial strength
  • Loom state avoids chemicals and uses significantly less water
  • Superior coating impregnation reduces polymer weight – and therefore transportation costs and emissions
  • A uniform fibre matrix encourages moisture to wick throughout the weave, accelerating biodegradability
  • Apertures created through the weaving process act as micro windows, allowing excellent light transmission for photosynthesis
  • Creates a protective microclimate with good airflow that prevents damage from frost and heat, allowing the tree to thrive
  • Its plant-based biodegradable fibres are readily available and have a well-established sustainable and renewable supply chain
  • A perforated seam will open to allow the sapling to spread outwards without having its natural growth stifled
  • Requires no collection – biodegrades over time and returns to the earth when its job is done

Testing methods and data

Testing of the tree shelter (also known as a guard) is ongoing at our lab. We’re serious about the quality and performance of our product, and proving its eco credentials too. In addition, we see it evolving over time, becoming the best it can be.

However, as you’ll discover, testing such an innovative product – which is without peer – is problematic! We’ve had to tailor ISO standards for testing to allow for the fact it’s not a plastic product, while retaining the same rigorous standards, in some cases.

Tree Hugger ties
We provide two ways to do this - one is using a metal tie; the other is a robust, quick, and easy reusable zip tie for our contract planters where speedOne is made from metal, the other is a plastic zip tie that you can reuse time and time again.

“It was great to try something which is made of biodegradable materials, particularly as they are in a prominent location and people can see for themselves our commitment to sustainability.”
